Creative brief – City of Arcades: The Art & Soul of Cardiff

Background

FOR Cardiff is commissioning 7 pieces of art to bring colour, character, and culture into the 7 famous city centre arcades – and to make art more accessible in the centre of Cardiff.

Next month (July), FOR Cardiff – the organisation behind the inaugural ‘City of Arcades’ brand – will be launching a fresh 2021 City of Arcades campaign with an art exhibition within the arcades.

This 7-piece collection will tell a story throughout the arcades, each arcade with a different chapter of the story – a visit to all needed for it to make sense.

The collection will sit across: Castle Arcade, High Street Arcade, Duke Arcade, Dominions Arcade, Morgan Arcade, Royal Arcade and Wyndham Arcade.

The arcades are a perfect art exhibition setting, and we aim to complement the individual historical features of each one. The art collection will be a real spectacle to drive conversation, provide photo moments and encourage more people to explore the historic arcades and the businesses nestled within them.

This project is exclusive to graduates and alumni from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) who studied ‘Theatre Design’ or ‘Design for Performance,’ looking for a platform to showcase their work.

Creative Brief

The art collection will be called The Art & Soul of Cardiff / Ar Drywydd Celf Caerdydd  – and each arcade will house one of the 7 key experiences that make up the identity or “h-art” of our Capital.

The 7 experiences are: History, Sport, Arts & Theatre, Music, Food & Drink, Green Spaces and Education.

The art will need to be produced in a sculpture-like style which can hang from the arcade ceilings – this could be multiple individual pieces grouped together in a kinetic mobile style, or one or two large stand-out pieces to make an impact within the architecture of the arcades.

Each piece needs to be a spectacle. The art needs to be bold – a statement big enough to grab the attention of visitors and residents and encourage them to look up.

We want the art to take inspiration from the key establishments/places/areas in the city centre that are linked to that experience. For example:

History

Draw inspiration from: Cardiff Castle, the industrial revolution and the secret canals and tunnels, the lost towns of Cardiff, for example, iconic Animal Wall, Victorian elements of arcades.

Example idea: Replicate the individual stone animals sitting on the castle wall, a sea of hanging peacock feathers.

Sport

Draw inspiration from: Principality Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park, Sport Wales, Glamorgan Cricket

Example idea: Rugby balls, goal posts, other sport-related equipment, interpretation of different sport kits.

Arts & Theatre

Draw inspiration from: National Museum Cardiff, Porters, RWCMD, St. David’s Hall, New Theatre, Sherman Theatre

Example idea: The evolution of Wales, prehistoric creatures (dinosaurs and woolly mammoths), space and time, theatre masks.

Music

Draw inspiration from: Live music scene in city centre, Womanby Street and its independent music venues, street busker and icons of Welsh music etc.

Example idea: Treble clefs, instruments, microphones, sound waves, Welsh musicians.

Food & Drink

Draw inspiration from: the iconic Cardiff Market, Cardiff-based produce and traditional Welsh foods.

Example idea: Fish sculptures and/or baskets of fruit and veg.

Green spaces

Draw inspiration from: Bute Park, Sophia Gardens and St Johns Gardens

Example idea: Hanging flowers native to Cardiff e.g., tulips and magnolia.

Education

Draw inspiration from: Cardiff University, University of South Wales, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Cardiff & Vale College, or even specific research or technology that Cardiff universities are known for, internationally.

Example idea: Floating graduation caps, the advances in technology made by Cardiff University e.g., biomedical research.

We want each piece of art to embody an experience of the city, and collectively, the art collection will piece together what makes up Cardiff city centre’s identity.

How you do this is up to you. Your artwork can be as literal or abstract as you like.

The artwork should be made from recycled and sustainable materials. It can consist of objects you’ve found / upcycled items, however, they must be robust enough to last well in the environment. Ultimately, we want it to represent you as an artist and your unique style.

As part of the process, you will need to document the creation of your piece of art which we will use as part of the exhibition promotion, e.g. timelapse footage, progress photos.

You will also need to participate in interviews for video production and for media/press.

As well as the opportunity to transform the arcades into a piece of art, this is also a fantastic opportunity to gain industry exposure. We will be working closely alongside the press and influencers who will be drumming up excitement for the pieces over social media. There is also potential for these pieces of art to become permanent fixtures – this will be confirmed at a later date.

There will be a plaque displayed with information on your piece, which will raise awareness of your work in a busy public space.

Once displayed, your piece of art will be owned by FOR Cardiff.

Commission Budget:

Each piece of art will have a budget of £1,200.

This includes your time to produce the piece and the materials.

Timeline:

If selected, you may begin the design process from the 24th of June and have 5 weeks to complete the piece of art. The installation of the artwork will be at the beginning of August. You will need to be available to assist with the installation of your work during this time.

  • Applications open: Wednesday 16th
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 23rd June @ 9.00am
  • Successful artists will be notified: Thursday 24th
  • Creative process period: Friday 25th June – Friday 30th July (5 weeks)
  • Creative session for all artists with sculpture professional Bettina Reeves: Wednesday 30th June (time TBC)
  • Art installation: w/c 2 August

How to Apply:

Please complete the following:

  1. Explain why you would like to be a part of this project. Please draw on your personal relationship/link to Cardiff here. (400 words max or a video no longer than 2.5 minutes)
  2. The individual pieces of art need to be a real spectacle and stand out enough to turn the heads of visitors. Create a short mood board so we can get a flavour of the types of artworks you’d use as inspiration for this brief.

We also need:

  • Portfolio of your previous work
  • Your credentials

All applications should be sent to cityofarcades@wearecowshed.co.uk by 5pm on Tuesday 22nd June.

The 7 successful artists will be invited to attend a compulsory creative session with Bettina Reeves on Wednesday 30th June to discuss ideas and concepts for the artwork.

You will need to be available w/c 2 August to support with the art installation and any media interviews and/or promotional activity.

The successful artists will be decided by a specialist panel, including Bettina Reeves (ex RWCMD tutor and creator of the Abergavenny Food Festival hanging sculptures), Rory Flemming (Manager of Morgan Quarter), Carolyn Brownell (Head of Marketing and Communications at FOR Cardiff and City of Arcades campaign lead).

Our panel will allocate one of the seven experiences to each artist.

The 7 successful artists will be provided with a further creative brief that provides further details about the space available/size approximation, the arcade your piece will be displayed in and how your piece will be fixed/displayed, including any weight limitations.

If you have any questions or would like any assistance with your application, you can call us on 02920 789 321 or email us using the address above.

We are committed to supporting creatives whose background and/or identity is underrepresented. This includes but is not limited to creatives with disabilities or long-term health difficulties, creatives from lower socio-economic backgrounds, creatives with LGBTQIA+ identities and creatives from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds. We also particularly welcome applications from creatives working in the medium of Welsh.

Briff Creadigol –

Dinas yr Arcêd: Ar Drywydd Celf Caerdydd

Cefndir

Mae Caerdydd AM BYTH yn comisiynu 7 darn o gelf i ddod â lliw, cymeriad a diwylliant i mewn i 7 arcêd enwog canol y ddinas – ac i wneud celf yn fwy hygyrch yng nghanol Caerdydd.

Y mis nesaf (Gorffennaf), bydd Caerdydd AM BYTH – y sefydliad y tu ôl i’r brand agoriadol ‘Dinas yr Arcêd’ – yn lansio ymgyrch Dinas yr Arcêd ffres 2021 gydag arddangosfa gelf o fewn yr arcedau.

Bydd y casgliad 7 darn hwn yn adrodd stori trwy’r arcedau, pob arcêd gyda phennod wahanol o’r stori – rhaid ymweld â phob un er mwyn iddo wneud synnwyr.

Bydd y casgliad yn ymddangos yn: Arcêd y Castell, Arcêd y Stryd Fawr, Arcêd Heol y Dug, Arcêd Dominions, Arcêd Morgan, yr Arcêd Frenhinol ac Arcêd Wyndham.

Mae’r arcedau’n lleoliad arddangosfa gelf berffaith, a’n nod yw ategu nodweddion hanesyddol unigol pob un. Bydd y casgliad celf yn wledd go iawn i’r llygad i yrru sgwrs, yn darparu cyfleoedd i dynnu lluniau ac annog mwy o bobl i archwilio’r arcedau hanesyddol a’r busnesau sy’n swatio ynddynt.

Mae’r prosiect hwn yn unigryw i raddedigion a chyn-fyfyrwyr o Goleg Brenhinol  Cerdd a Drama Cymru (RWCMD) a astudiodd ‘Dylunio Theatr’ neu ‘Dylunio ar gyfer Perfformiad,’ sy’n chwilio am blatfform i arddangos eu gwaith.

Brîff Creadigol

Enw’r casgliad celf yw The Art & Soul of Cardiff / Ar Drywydd Celf Caerdydd – a bydd pob arcêd yn gartref i un o’r 7 profiad allweddol sy’n ffurfio hunaniaeth neu galon ein Prifddinas.

Y 7 profiad yw: Hanes, Chwaraeon, y Celfyddydau a Theatr, Cerddoriaeth, Bwyd a Diod, Mannau Gwyrdd ac Addysg.

Bydd angen cynhyrchu’r gelf mewn arddull tebyg i gerflun a all hongian o nenfydau’r arcêd – gallai hyn fod yn ddarnau unigol lluosog wedi’u grwpio gyda’i gilydd mewn arddull symudol cinetig, neu un neu ddau o ddarnau mawr sy’n sefyll allan i gael effaith o fewn pensaernïaeth yr arcedau.

Mae angen i bob darn fod yn wledd i’r llygad. Mae angen i’r gelf fod yn feiddgar – datganiad sy’n ddigon mawr i fachu sylw ymwelwyr a thrigolion a’u hannog i edrych i fyny.

Rydyn ni am i’r gelf gymryd ysbrydoliaeth o’r sefydliadau / lleoedd / ardaloedd allweddol yng nghanol y ddinas sy’n gysylltiedig â’r profiad hwnnw. Er enghraifft:

Hanes

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Castell Caerdydd, y chwyldro diwydiannol a’r camlesi a’r twneli cudd, trefi coll Caerdydd, er enghraifft, y Wal Anifeiliaid eiconig, elfennau Fictoraidd o arcedau.

Syniad enghreifftiol: Atgynhyrchwch yr anifeiliaid carreg unigol sy’n eistedd ar wal y castell, môr o blu paun yn hongian.

Chwaraeon

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Stadiwm y Principality, Parc yr Arfau Caerdydd, Chwaraeon Cymru, Criced Morgannwg

Syniad enghreifftiol: Peli rygbi, pyst gôl, offer arall sy’n gysylltiedig â chwaraeon, dehongli gwahanol gitiau chwaraeon.

Celf a Theatr

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd, Porters, RWCMD, Neuadd Dewi Sant, Theatr Newydd, Theatr y Sherman

Syniad enghreifftiol: Esblygiad Cymru, creaduriaid cynhanesyddol (deinosoriaid a mamothiaid gwlanog), gofod ac amser, masgiau theatr.

Cerddoriaeth

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Sîn gerddoriaeth fyw yng nghanol y ddinas, Stryd Womanby a’i lleoliadau cerddoriaeth annibynnol, bysgwyr stryd ac eiconau cerddoriaeth Gymreig ac ati.

Syniad enghreifftiol: Allwedd y trebl, offerynnau, meicroffonau, tonnau sain, cerddorion o Gymru.

Bwyd a Diod

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Marchnad eiconig Caerdydd, cynnyrch o Gaerdydd a bwydydd traddodiadol Cymreig.

Syniad enghreifftiol: Cerfluniau pysgod a/neu fasgedi o ffrwythau a llysiau.

Mannau Gwyrdd

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Parc Bute, Gerddi Sophia a Gerddi Sant Ioan

Syniad enghreifftiol: Blodau crog sy’n frodorol o Gaerdydd e.e., tiwlipau a magnolia.

Addysg

Tynnwch ysbrydoliaeth wrth: Prifysgol Caerdydd, Prifysgol De Cymru, Coleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru, Coleg Caerdydd a’r Fro, neu hyd yn oed ymchwil neu dechnoleg benodol y mae prifysgolion Caerdydd yn adnabyddus amdanynt, yn rhyngwladol.

Syniad enghreifftiol: Capiau graddio fel yn hedfan, y datblygiadau mewn technoleg a wnaed gan Brifysgol Caerdydd e.e., ymchwil biofeddygol.

Rydyn ni am i bob darn o gelf ymgorffori profiad o’r ddinas, ac ar y cyd, bydd y casgliad celf yn llunio’r hyn sy’n ffurfio hunaniaeth canol dinas Caerdydd.

Chi sydd i benderfynu sut i wneud hyn. Gall eich gwaith celf fod mor llythrennol neu haniaethol ag y dymunwch.

Dylai’r gwaith celf gael ei wneud o ddeunyddiau cynaliadwy wedi’u hailgylchu. Gall gynnwys gwrthrychau rydych chi wedi dod o hyd iddyn nhw / eitemau wedi’u hailgylchu, fodd bynnag, mae’n rhaid iddyn nhw fod yn ddigon cadarn i bara’n dda yn yr amgylchedd. Yn y pen draw, rydyn ni am iddo eich cynrychioli chi fel artist a’ch steil unigryw.

Fel rhan o’r broses, bydd angen i chi ddogfennu creu eich darn o gelf y byddwn yn ei ddefnyddio fel rhan o hyrwyddiad yr arddangosfa, e.e. lluniau treigl amser, tynnu lluniau wrth fynd ymlaen.

Bydd angen i chi hefyd gymryd rhan mewn cyfweliadau ar gyfer cynhyrchu fideo ac ar gyfer y cyfryngau / y wasg.

Yn ogystal â’r cyfle i drawsnewid yr arcedau yn ddarn o gelf, mae hwn hefyd yn gyfle gwych i ddod i gysylltiad â’r diwydiant. Byddwn yn gweithio’n agos ochr yn ochr â’r wasg a dylanwadwyr a fydd yn annog cyffro’r darnau dros y cyfryngau cymdeithasol. Mae potensial hefyd i’r darnau hyn o gelf ddod yn osodiadau parhaol – bydd hyn yn cael ei gadarnhau yn ddiweddarach.

Bydd plac wedi’i arddangos gyda gwybodaeth am eich darn, a fydd yn codi ymwybyddiaeth o’ch gwaith mewn man cyhoeddus prysur.

Ar ôl ei arddangos, Caerdydd AM BYTH fydd yn berchen ar eich darn o gelf.

Cyllideb y Comisiwn:

Bydd gan bob darn o gelf gyllideb o £1,200.

Mae hyn yn cynnwys eich amser i gynhyrchu’r darn a’r deunyddiau.

Amserlen:

Os cewch eich dewis, gallwch ddechrau’r broses ddylunio o’r 24ain o Fehefin a chael 5 wythnos i gwblhau’r darn o gelf. Bydd y gwaith celf yn cael ei osod ar ddechrau mis Awst. Bydd angen i chi fod ar gael i gynorthwyo gyda gosod eich gwaith yn ystod yr amser hwn.

o Gosod celf: w/c 2 Awst

Sut i wneud cais:

Cwblhewch y canlynol:

  2. Mae angen i’r darnau celf unigol fod yn wledd go iawn i’r llygad a sefyll allan yn ddigonol i droi pennau ymwelwyr. Crëwch fwrdd hwyliau byr fel y gallwn gael blas ar y mathau o weithiau celf y byddwch yn eu defnyddio fel ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer y brîff hwn.
