BEETHOVEN 250 – KEYS TO THE CITY

This year, the world will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. In Cardiff the classical music community has come together to stage an exciting programme of events throughout the year.

Alongside the musical activity, Cardiff’s Beethoven 250 celebrations will also present Keys to the City – an exciting, eye-catching trail of artistically transformed street pianos, funded by FOR Cardiff.

A curated collection of 12 pianos will be placed in 12 different locations across the city centre, available for the public to play, during May 2020.

BBC NOW’s Head of Artistic Planning Meurig Bowen created a similar project in 2016 for Cheltenham Music Festival which is documented in these photographs.

Keys to the City is presented by BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW), St David’s Hall – National Concert Hall for Wales (SDH), Welsh National Opera (WNO), Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD), and Sinfonia Cymru will present Keys to the City.
