A Very Cardiff Christmas: Your Guide to a Magical 2025 Festive Season

A Very Cardiff Christmas is just around the corner, and this year the city is set to shine brighter than ever! From the return of the festive FOR Cardiff Christmas projections and decorated arcades to Santa’s grotto and magical winter trails, there’s so much to get excited about in the Welsh capital. Here’s your guide on everything you need to plan the perfect Christmas in Cardiff.

Magical Projections Return – 13 November

Come and see our city centre wrapped in the festive spirit this holiday season! Following last year’s success, our enchanting Christmas Projections return to light up Cardiff Central Station. Inspired by ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ poem of iconic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, the display promises to bring festive storytelling to life, with Dylan Thomas even narrating the poem as part of the projection.

And this year, we’re adding even more magic as Cardiff Market joins in with its own festive projection, inspired by the market stalls and rich retail and hospitality offering in the city centre. Make sure to visit after dark to enjoy these stunning visuals in all their glory.

Christmas Light Switch-On & Festive Kick-Off – 13 November

Mark your diaries, Thursday November 13 is the official start of the festive season in Cardiff. Not only will the city light up for the first time, but Winter Wonderland and the Christmas Markets also open on this day. It’s the ultimate moment to shop, sip, and shine as the city flips the switch to full festive mode.

Cardiff Kids Christmas Lights Switch On – 13 November

This festive season, Canal Quarter will sparkle with creativity as pupils from Tredegarville CIW Primary School bring their imaginations to life. Now in its second year, this heart-warming project invites children to design their very own Christmas lights, inspired by themes of illumination, Cardiff’s unique identity, and the women who shape the city. Join us from 5pm for the switch-on and enjoy the magic of the season with a live choir.

City of Arcades: A Boutique Christmas Glow-up

Step into Cardiff’s City of Arcades, a beautiful network of Victorian and Edwardian arcades that celebrate 150 years of Welsh retail culture. During the festive season, the arcades transform into a wonderland of twinkling lights, traditional decorations, and unique gift shopping. FOR Cardiff is delighted to have supported the arcades lighting up for Christmas for the second year running with magical displays at each entrance.

Treat yourself to a Very Cardiff Christmas by exploring independent shops, picking up locally made gifts and bites, or warm up with a festive hot chocolate in one of the charming cafes hidden among the arches.
