FOR Cardiff Statement on the Announcement that the Museum of Cardiff will remain at the Old Library

In early 2023, Cardiff Council held a six week public consultation on how it could bridge a £24m funding shortfall in its budget.

Residents were asked for their views on several cost-saving proposals including the proposal to turn the Museum of Cardiff into a mobile operation.

Following that consultation, the council have announced that the Museum of Cardiff would remain open in the Old Library on the Hayes for now.

Cardiff Council Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, said

“The proposal to reduce the offer at the Museum of Cardiff and/or switch to a mobile-based service has been removed. Instead, we will work with the trustees of the museum to secure a sustainable future, including looking at options for delivering the service at an alternative location.”

FOR Cardiff have historically laid out clear positions on the importance of heritage and culture in our city centre.

The Museum of Cardiff is an asset to the city and an important part of our local culture and identity. We are pleased to see that the museum will stay in the Old Library for the time being.

We would like to see a long term future in the city centre secured for this important attraction and would be happy to offer our assistance where possible to make sure this happens.
